City of Korcula
Korcula (island of Korcula)
Come to know Korčula - the historical and tourist centre of the island of the same name in the South Dalmatian Archipelago. Known as the birth-place of Marko Polo, this town has been justly called "a little Dubrovnik" due to its picturesque squares and medieval atmosphere. While the works of skilful Korčula stone-masons cause wonder by its perseverance, Moreška brings liveliness to the streets of Korčula, as one of the three chivalrous dances you can see only on this exceedingly beautiful island!
Beaches: pebble, rocky
YOUR TREASURE ISLAND
This is a story about a treasure island - Korcula, the beautiful island of coniferous woods. Give yourself over to the waves of the sea washing its shores.
Come and travel with us around this fairy-tale island visited by Aeneas and the Argonauts, mythical heroes, while Poseidon himself , the God of the Sea, chose Korcula to be the home of Aesop's daughter Kerkyre.
MORESKA - THE SWORD DANCE
Korcula is one of those rare places in the Mediterranean which has for centuries cultivated ancient chivalrous dances, such as moreska, kumpanija and mostra, whose rules were described in medieval statutes.
Dressed in brightly coloured fiery red and frightening black costumes, two opposed armies are fighting before you for the affection of a young lady. While their swords, their war cries and the nimble movements of their feet echo in the town squares adorned by buildings made from the white stone of Korcula, stop the clock for a moment and become part of their song.
GOURMETS - YOUR ATTENTION!
For the gourmets Korcula is the Promised Land - here the food is good and the drinks even better, and when one feels content he will even sing a song.
You will find many such scenes in Korcula. Its sea is rich in fish and shell-fish, the fertile land offers sweet figs and succulent olives for the golden yellow oil, and the vineyards produce clusters of grapes exuding the warmth of the sun. Posip, Marastina and Grk - wonderful white wines and the red wines Plavac and Admiral are something very special. While listening to the songs of the harmony-singing groups from Korcula and enjoying the smell of the sea, you will be served a royal meal: prosciutto ham with olives and cheese soaked in oil, then grilled fish and lobster risotto, oysters and mussel freshly taken out of the sea, followed by pastries from the jealously guarded recipes of the old grannies. All we can say is:
Korcula is truly a land of sweet wonders
MARCO POLO AND PIRATES
The past has richly endowed Korcula; starting from the third millenium BC the Illyrians, the Greeks and the Romans were celebrating life by building palaces and towers, and while the stone-masons were carving stone lovers, highly competent seamen were navigating the neighbouring seas.
There are legends about the courageous pirates from Korcula, very skilfull at their trade, filling their coffres with real treasures and many valuable objects. This island, whose inhabitants live with the sea and from the sea, is the home of the explorer and travel writer Marko Polo, the man who for Europe discovered the Far East, but returned to his native Korcula, its coves and the promontories of the archipelago consisting of 48 islands. Visit Korcula - a fairy-tale island that exists in real life! |
